Frequently Asked Questions

Booking and Consultations

How do I schedule an appointment?

Getting booked is easy! [Fill in: describe your booking method — online form, DM, email, phone, etc.] Once you reach out, we'll get you connected with the right artist and talk through your idea. Not sure where to start? A consultation is always a great first step. Just hit "book your session" and fill in the info then submit.

Can I talk to an artist before I book?

Absolutely — and we encourage it! We offer consultations both in-person and remotely so you can connect with your artist, share your vision, and make sure everyone's on the same page before any commitments are made.

Just start by clicking the "book your session", share your contact info and what your are interested in then make sure to select "I want a consultation" and you will hear back from your selected artist.

Deposits and Pricing

Do you require a deposit?

Yes — a non-refundable deposit is required to lock in your appointment date and artist. The exact amount depends on the artist and the scope of your project, and we'll let you know the details when you book. The good news? Your deposit goes toward the total cost of your tattoo, so it's not extra — it's just your first payment.

How much will my tattoo cost?

Every tattoo is one of a kind, so pricing is too. Your quote is based on size, complexity, placement, and the time it'll take — and we'll go over all of it with you during your consultation before anything is scheduled. We want you to feel completely comfortable with the numbers before we ever pick up a needle.

Preparing for Your Appointment

How should I prepare for my appointment?

Show up ready to have a great time — here's how to set yourself up for success:

Eat a full meal within 2–3 hours of your appointment (seriously, don't skip this one)

Stay hydrated in the days leading up to your session

Skip the alcohol for at least 24 hours beforehand

Avoid sun exposure or sunburn on the area getting tattooed

Wear clothing that gives easy access to the spot or bring something that does

Skip the lotion, oils, and makeup on the area the day of your appointment

Taking care of yourself beforehand makes a real difference in how your session goes and how your tattoo heals.

What health information do I need to share?

We'll ask you to complete an intake form before your service, and we need you to be upfront with us. This isn't us being nosy; it's us making sure your session is as safe as possible.

Please let us know about:

Any allergies (inks, pigments, latex, topical anesthetics)

Medications you're taking, including blood thinners, retinoids, antibiotics, or immunosuppressants

Medical conditions like diabetes, hemophilia, autoimmune disorders, psoriasis, eczema, or a history of keloid scarring

Pregnancy or nursing status

Any recent surgeries, illness, or radiation treatment

Not sure if something's relevant? When in doubt, write it down or check with your doctor before your appointment. The more we know going in, the better we can take care of you.

The Tattoo Experience

Do tattoos hurt?

Honestly? It depends. Most people describe it as a scratching or burning sensation — not unbearable, but definitely noticeable. Pain level varies a lot based on placement, your personal pain tolerance, and how long you're in the chair. Bony areas (ribs, spine, hands, feet) tend to be more intense, while fleshier spots are usually more manageable. The best prep? Eat well, sleep well, and come in relaxed. Your artist will check in with you throughout the session.

What's the difference between a machine tattoo and a handpoke tattoo?

Machine tattooing uses an electric device to drive the needle in rapid, repeated strokes. Great for bold work, shading, and larger pieces. It's faster with strong line consistency.

Handpoke is done entirely by hand, no motor, one dot at a time. It's a slower process with a softer, more organic finish. Popular for fine-line and minimalist styles.

Both produce lasting results when done by a skilled artist. At Slowpoke, several of our artists work in both handpoke and machine techniques.

Healing and Aftercare

How long does a tattoo take to heal?

The surface of your tattoo typically looks healed within 2–4 weeks, but deeper layers of skin can take up to 3–6 months to fully settle. During that time, proper aftercare is everything. Your artist will walk you through exactly what to do when your session wraps up — follow those instructions closely, and your tattoo will thank you for it.

We recommend Ink Defense Tattoo Care - all natural and great for sensitive skin.

Do you offer touch-ups?

Yes, because we want your tattoo to look as good healed as it did fresh. A few things to keep in mind:

Your tattoo needs to be fully healed before a touch-up can happen

Aftercare instructions need to have been followed

Some placements — like hands, fingers, feet, and inner lips — naturally fade faster and may not qualify

Touch-up policies vary by artist, so confirm the details with yours at your appointment

Touch-ups are only available for work done at our studios
